I opened the SOUTH hand ONE CLUB, LHO bid THREE DIAMONDS, partner THREE SPADES, RHO FOUR HEARTS, I DOUBLE, Pass, Pass, RHO removes himself to FIVE DIAMONDS, I DOUBLE , Pass, Partner Jeffrey Removes my DOUBLE to SIX CLUBS !
A heart was led, and I played a loser on loser, throwing the singleton diamond from dummy, as Righty won with his ACE. RHO plays a spade which I take with the ACE. I cash the CLUB KING, small cards appearing. Next I play another trump, NINE from lefty, should I go for the drop or the finesse?
I got it wrong, putting in the Jack.
Let us count. Why did W lead a heart? From the bidding (a seemingly insane FOUR HEARTS), and the lead, it should be clear that LHO has one and RHO has eight hearts.
From the bid of THREE DIAMONDS, we should place LHO with seven diamonds.
Now, the spade SIX return, and the appearance of the DEUCE, should strongly suggest the suit is breaking LHO- RHO , 3-1, or J82 - 6. So LHO is 3-1-6-2 and RHO 1-8-2-2.
Partner, asked why he chose clubs over spades, said that I need have no spades at all for my ONE CLUB opener. True, but I rate to have a couple, and even if I am missing one of the pointed suit Aces, I rate to have the other. So, SIX SPADES, is laydown if the lead is the HA, whereas, if diamonds are led, the slam is no worse than the club slam, needing you to find the CQ.
