Partner (jeffreyg) (N) opened his distributional hand ONE CLUB, Righty DOUBLEd, I bid ONE HEART, LHO FOUR SPADES, and I was already licking my chops, and I am surprised to hear partner bid in front of me FIVE HEARTS, PASS, PASS, FIVE SPADES. Incredible I think, and indeed I am slightly annoyed to hear a more incredible SIX HEARTS from partner. It is DOUBLED on my right, and we all pass, as I hold my peace and await dummy.

Interesting.

The SPADE Q is led and ruffed in dummy. T2: H to the TEN as Lefty shows out! pitching a spade. T3. I persist with trump, HJ driving out the A, as Lefty pitches another Spade. RHO returns the SPADE ACE, I trump in dummy, Cash the HK, (diamond pitch on my left). I cross to hand via the DIAMOND ACE, Draw the last trump with my last trump, pitching a club (West a spade). I now have remaining S:K8 D:75 C:J9 and dummy C:AQ7654. The next play is for all the marbles. CJ advanced, COVERED, CA, C3. Now on the CQ, the TEN falls from the right and the EIGHT from the left. All the clubs are now good.

Two things to note. Partner's judgement was aggresive but accurate. On the other hand, he had not given sufficient thought to playing in clubs, which slam as it happens would have been defeated by HA and H ruff.

Thus, it is better to have trumps split 4-0 than 2-2. Plus 1660 is worth 98.5%

Welcome to Ramesh's BRIDGE BLOG

In these pages, I comment on hands from Bridge Base Online ACBL tourneys. I play in these with a variety of partners with different degrees of skill. I might present a hand or two from my collection of bridge books, every now and then. I am more interested in play and defense than in complex bidding systems, but I do follow the cut and thrust of Vanderbilt and World Championship Vugraph and try to keep abreast of expert practice in the obstructive and constructive bidding system department. I may also feature, newspaper-style, famous hands from important matches that I saw on Vugraph.

NOTE: For JUNE, I am experimenting with adding BBO's Handviewers, which make bridge movies embedded. Just
scroll down beyond the few sampled book covers and you arrive at the blogs that play themselves with the NEXT button. THANKS, BBO!!
